1905 was a watershed year for the Harley Davidson Company. That's when Harley won its first motorcycle race. After getting the taste of a victory, Harley Davidson continued to enter off-road races, lap races, and endurance competitions. 1913 saw the creation of the Harley Davidson racing department.
Benefitting from Harley Davidson's quality offerings, the United States Military purchased 1/3 of all Harley Davidson motorcycles that were made in 1917. A year later, in 1918, the military's motorcycle brigade was comprised of over 50% Harleys. World War One was fought with the aid and precision of over twenty thousand motorcycles, the majority of which were Harley Davidson's. Harley enthusiasts formed The Harley Owners Group (aka HOG) and that organization holds the title of the largest motorcycle club. Membership in HOG grew to over 500,000 members by the year 2000.
One can only expect 2010 to be another great year for Harley Davidson. With ever changing equipment and more efficient and economical engines, Harley's are becoming popular modes of transportation, not only for leisure but also for necessity.
