There may be occasions in your pup's life when he/she must take medication that you the master administer at your home. Depending on your dog's health symptoms, this could be the result of an injuries, a disease that's been revealed, or a straightforward health problem that can be aided with some basic medical treatment. The three fundamental methods to provide medicine to your pet are:

1) The "pouch method" with liquid dog medicine

2) Prying open the mouth.

3) Pills or tablets.

The "Pouch Method" Utilizing Liquid Medicine

Liquid medication is the easiest of all solutions because you can either place the medicine in your pooch's food or water, or just use a dropper to enter the dog's mouth. In order to employ the pouch method you will use one hand to pull the corner of the dog's lip open. This is the corner of the lower lip. Once you do that the lip forms a pouch. During this time hold the dog's head back a little and then insert. You will pour with the opposite hand. If this procedure does not seem to go very smoothly then get some help. Get a friend to assist you in holding the dog in place. If the dog has its teeth tightly closed then carefully pry his mouth open using a couple of fingers. The pup might struggle to move away but one thing you can do is sit the pooch near a corner with his backside facing the corner so that he doesn't have much space to squirm. Now you follow the procedures to make the pouch and administer the liquid medicine.

How To Pry Your Canine's Mouth Open

In the "pouch method" we discussed up above, we merely pulled down the back corner of the canine's lower lip. However, with the "prying" approach you'll be raising up the canine's upper jaw to open the mouth. Firstly you use your thumb on one side and your fingers on the other, resting them in the spaces behind the canine's fangs. So you are holding just the canine's upper jaw with that hand. With your hand in that location the pup will usually release its mouth a little bit to make room for your digits, and this is your chance to pour the medication in, either with a spoon or a dropper. You insert the medicine in from the front, between your pooch's front teeth. You do this as the hand placed over the dog's upper jaw holds the jaw back a bit to keep the mouth open and easy to access.

Giving Your Dog Pills Or Capsules

To give your canine a pill or capsule other than a chewable one, use the pry-open-mouth method. Hold the pill between your index finger and your thumb, or if it's easier for you, between the second finger and index finger. When you have the capsule or pill in place, use your other fingers to gently push open the lower jaw by the front teeth. Now you have to get the pill as far back into the dog's throat as possible. Then allow your dog to swallow naturally. Yes it might be tougher in the beginning, but as you get experience and your dog becomes more accustomed, it's going to be a more leisurely routine.
