There are occasions in your pup's life when it will require medicines that need to be given in the house. At times a disease may strike necessitating daily treatment and care, or perhaps your pet could go through an injury that calls for your private provision of medicines. There're typically 3 techniques for giving your pooch his remedies:
1) Liquid medicine (using the pouch method).
2) Manually opening the dog's mouth to insert medicine (prying open)
3) Administering pills or capsules
Liquid (Medication: Using The Pouch Method
The easiest medication to give to your dog is most definitely liquid canine medicine, since dripping the medication into the pooch's food or water makes the medicine mix in seamlessly. If you've ever tried to administer your dog a pill, you are well aware that sharp dogs repeatedly find a way to devour all the food in the bowl but then spit out the pill! With liquid medication you won't stumble upon this problem. Another method to give liquid dog medication is by using an eye dropper to insert the medication directly into the dog's mouth. The "pouch method" calls for using one of your two hands to tug a corner of your pup's lip down, specifically the back corner of the dog's lower lip. Pulling your dog's lip down results in a "pouch" shape where you can place the dropper, and while holding the dog's head in 1 place drip the liquid medicine into the dog's mouth through the pouch opening. It may sound challenging to hold the dog's head in position, form a pouch with the pooch's lip, and give the liquid dog medication all with just a pair of hands. But feel free to ask another person to help you with one of those functions to ease the process. one way to prevent the dog from fleeing at the time of the procedure is to sit the canine with its rear-end in a corner so that he can not back up to run off.
"Prying" The Dog's Mouth Open
Now with this approach you need to pry the dog's mouth open at the upper jaw. Take your thumb and your fingers and place them in the gaps behind the fangs as you clasp the upper jaw with one hand. At this moment, the canine will typically relax enough to open his mouth a little. Then you pour the medicine with a spoon or eye dropper between the dog's front teeth. Certainly you'll need to have his head back just a bit.
Giving Your Dog Pills Or Tablets
Whenever you need to give your dog a pill or capsule, whether it be medicinal or just a simple vitamin or supplement, employ a pry-the-mouth-open technique much like that we talked about in the preceding paragraph. But rather than a spoon or dropper, you hold the canine pill, tablet, or capsule between your first finger and thumb (though a different combination of thumb + finger would do); and while 1 hand is lifting up the dog's upper jaw, you enter the pup's mouth from the front with the hand that is holding the pill. Your free fingers on that hand should be used to pull the lower jaw downward. Take the pill and hold it between your first finger and your thumb, or if you find it easier, between the index finger and ring finger. After you have the capsule or pill in place, use the remainder of your fingers to pushdown the lower jaw near the front teeth. After that you need to place the pill as deeply back into the canine's mouth as you can, down into its throat to encourage swallowing. This may require a couple of tries and a little bit of cautious maneuvering, but the canine's swallowing reflex should take over eventually so that he or she consumes the pill. I highly doubt there's even one dog out there that enjoys taking its medicine! And I highly doubt there is a single master out there who enjoys administering it. But with a little bit of practice it gets easier and not such a shock for your canine.
