70’s and 80’s are remembered by many being the harbingers of various fashion styles and statements. The designs were innovative and very quickly touched the hearts of lots of people. These years also saw a rapid change in the fashion world. MTV, which appeared on the scene then, revolutionized fashion, music and several other things. People attempted to express themselves in many ways. The era saw sudden changes in the styles of men and women.
In the decade of 70’s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. This type of a style statement just interchanged in the 80s. Women were observed in bold designs with pads on shoulders. Men switched to wear full sleeve shirts crafted from costly fabric with baggy loose trousers which subsided towards the lower portion.. “Romantic Movement” inspired by the former ruffians was commonly started by a new designer romantic look. New crazes such as designer jeans and “leather in clothing” were a trend among the public.
Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes which were transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. The popular leisure wear clothing of this era was jog pants and track suits. Acid washed faded jeans and denim jackets together with piercing and tattooing were made common by the music bands. It was considered trendy for men who wore earrings. Hairdo’s changed with shiny voluminous looks in fashion. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was well-liked by teenagers. Men began to keep longer hair and women kept shorter hair.
The precious gems studded jewellery was considered synonymous with status. It represented power and wealth. Women turned to wearing long earrings, often different in both ears. Sometimes, they even wore single earrings. The trend in jewellery was to wear chains of gold & silver in punk style and neon colours. Enamel and modern designs also gave some edge over the old jewellery. Through the early 80s electronic watches with metal bands were quite a rage among the youth. Subsequently adults reverted back to dial watches. But teens still choose to wear dynamically coloured plastic watches with roman numerals. Significantly the Movado design was a characteristic of status with lustrous design and a dot at 12. Sometimes people also wore several watches on one wrist along with hoop earrings and gold bracelets.
Other trend setters listed designer bags crafted from leather. Clutch bags were common as they were compact and so appealing. Briefcases were also in huge numbers. Women tried to match shoe colors with their bags. Shawls in different range & colours were worn on different occasions like in day time with tank tops and at evening with gowns. Designer lingerie for women also made a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Around 1984-85 metal framed glasses gained popularity. A smaller rounder type was the people’s choice through the decade. The daily life in that decade was remarkably influenced by fashion.
