Many style statements and new fashions came up in the decades of 70’s and 80’s. These innovative designs caught the attention of millions and ruled over their hearts. The fashion had changed very rapidly during those years. The arrival of MTV to the public domain had created a radical change in various spheres like music industry and fashion. Everyone was trying to redefine themselves during these years. The changes that both women and men brought upon themselves were unexpected.
Tight shirts with loose pants were fashionable in 70’s. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women once wore bold dresses having shoulder pads and men wore shirts in full sleeves that were stitched in costly material together with loose fitting baggy trousers which were slightly tapered at the ankle joint. Now, this designer clothing gave a romantic outlook and delivered a romantic movement, which in turn was inspired by punks from the former era. The hot and fashionable outfits of leather and designer jeans also emerged later and became an integral part of fashion.
Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes that were transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. Tracksuits and jog-pants became leisure wear in this era. The music bands on this era also came up with their own style statement of faded jeans that were acid washed and denim jackets as well as tattoos & piercings were new highlights of their fashion trend. Men began to wear flashy earrings. Hairstyle included a lot of mousse which resulted in a shiny voluminous look. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was popular among teenagers. The full trend of hair was reversed as men had long hair while women had short hair.
The rich and powerful used jewellery engraved with valuable gems and stones. Women wore peculiar long earrings which often were not matching and sometimes they would wear just one earring. Fine gold and silver chains, punk style, neon colours in jewellery defined trends. The old jewellery was decorated with modern shapes and enamel. Digital watches with metal wristbands started popularising the beginning of ‘80s but later on adults came back to dial watches. Teens still favored the radiant colours of plastic wrist watches. Watch faces had roman numerals. Significantly the Movado design was a hallmark of status with lustrous design and a dot at 12. Wearing two wrist watches on the same arm became a trend. Gold bracelets and hoop earrings became common in this time.
Other trend setters listed designer bags made from leather. Clutch bags were fashionable as these were compact and thus appealing. Briefcases were also in huge numbers. It had been normal for women to match their shoe colour to their bags. Shawls in various range & colours were worn on different occasions like in day time with tank tops and at night with gowns. Designer lingerie for women also formed a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Small metal framed glasses became popular towards 1984-85. A smaller rounder type continued to be common throughout the decade. Fashion had a massive repercussion and bearing on the lives of people throughout those decades.
