What is the best way to maximize fishing fun? A big part of the answer to that question is to use good equiupment. Time and opportunity is enough of a limit to angling let alone cheap equipment letting you down. We are going to look at three excellent reels that cover a wide range of angling options. The reels can be used to catch fish in both saltwater and fresh water. Two of the reels are made by Shimano and the third reel by Daiwa.

Recommended fishing pleasure # 1 is the Shimano Sustain FE 5000. Use of lightweight materials has pared the weight of this reel down to 13.9 ounces. If the Sustain FE400 is not quite right you can choose another variant. Other reels in the Sustain series range from the lighter FE 1000 up to the higher capacity FE 8000.

Looks aren't everything, although on that count the Sustain scores high, but its functionality that counts. What this reel excels at is smooth operation. Keen fisherman who have reviewed this reel all rave about this attribute. After all the very essence of fishing is casting the bait and hauling in the fish and if a reel does this well its game on! Shimano engineers have cleverly engineered the shape of the spool and applied a special titanium coating to give minimum line friction when casting. You will be surprised at the distance you can cast your bait with a comfortable amount of effort. As if that was not enough the reel also has an amazing drag. This does a very good job of taking the load of a strong fish with its smooth operation. Jerking is pretty much eliminated. When the fish makes a run the reel keeps pressure on it while releasing line to prevent tackle breakage.

You also come to appreciate how the reel eliminates line twist and that the bail arm doesn’t snap closed when you don't want it to. Moisture is effectively kept at bay by good quality seals. The handle is a stung one piece unit made from machined aluminum. Too bad its not a little cheaper than $270 but it is certainly worth the price for the quality of the product and all the fun it will provide.

Not everyone likes a spinning type reel. Or you may choose to own both. Well the Shimano Calcutta TE 400 is a top conventional style reel. This beauty is a bait caster that is compact without comprising line capacity. And although it is light it does not lack power. Of course lightweight, high performance reels don't come cheap and this reel is no exception.

The finish of the reel is a low maintenance but attractive gold colour. Of course good looks don't count for much without good performance. As with the Sustain, it offers exceptional casting. Think smooth as butter and you get the picture. The drag is also extremely good; strong, powerful, and very smooth. With 16 lbs of drag available it has an impressive power to weight ratio. This all translates to a whole lot of fun in your hands when you are fishing. When you get hooked up to 45 pounds of fighting fish you will know that your money was well spent because the reel is up for this kind of workout.

As reflected by the price this is a top end offering. The reel exudes quality and features Shimano's most advanced technology. If you are wanting a reel that will continue to provide fishing enjoyment for a long time to come then this reel would be a good choice as long as periodic maintenance is carried out.

Last up is a reel that is in a different class to the Sustain and Calcutta. Also produced by a Japanese company, the Daiwa Saltiga Expedition is an extraordinary reel designed for big fish. With 66 lbs of drag this reel has serious grunt. A stunning amount of power for a spinning reel. But if serious sports fishing is your thing then you are going to love this one. This reel is great for blue water fishing for sharks, marlin giant tuna, wahoo etc or for a crafty old fresh water monster. The strength of the Saltiga comes from the powerful gears that utilize a cast marine bronze gear that has been precisely cut via a digital process. Daiwa call this feature Digigear which results in extremely fine tolerances and flawless matching of the gear faces. The body of the reel is designed to give maximum stiffness which allows for the seals to prevent water getting inside. Great feature as it dramatically reduces maintenance. To make sure it is going to last, the fourteen ball bearing are made from super corrosion resistant material, the handle is crafted from a single piece of aluminum, and the hyper-tournament drag is fully waterproof.

There is a ton of cranking power with the handle and gearing setup and drag system is superbly smooth and strong. On top of that Daiwa have produced a reel that is fully washable for saltwater use. Thanks to a special duct underneath the reel, water is able to be flushed through. This will provide less maintenance and longer service. Even though the Saltiga reel has performance to die for, it makes it easier to part with your money when you know a lot of trouble has been taken to make sure it is going to last the distance.

And that about sums it up. So for all you keen fishermen out there, if you are looking out for a new reel you wouldn't go far wrong choosing one of these three
