The pendulum swings methodically back and forth. Your eyes follow the object, a shiny lancet, one held ten inches from your eyes. The position of the object is necessary to produce the greatest possible strain on your eyes and eyelids, thus enabling you to maintain a steady, fixed stare at the object. Your eyes slowly get heavy as you enter into hypnotic induction. It is suggested that you will have imaginative experiences. Suddenly you succumb to an inner calling and are receptive to changes in experience, perception, sensation, emotion, thought and behavior. You are hypnotized.

Will you quack like a duck? You will if it’s suggested. Will you cry when someone else says your name twice? You will if it’s suggested. Will you obey these instructions until you wake the next morning? You will if it’s suggested. But why does this powerful act of suggestion have such control over your mind?

Hypnosis is really a trance state where a person mentally agrees to subject themselves to suggestion by opening their mind in a relaxed state, one with keen imagination. You aren’t really asleep but actually enter into a dream-like state. The subliminal stimuli may be audio or visual.

People enter hypnotic states with regularity. You might fall into a hypnotic state while cutting the grass, driving, reading a book, or even watching a movie. Let’s take reading a book as an example. As you read you go into a visual trance, one that allows you to interface with the character of the book. Likewise, at the movies, both audio and video subliminal messages heighten your imagination, and let you enter into the realm of suggestibility, becoming the character or part of the scenes.

Subliminal messages were once part of TV advertising. They were banned there and in the movie theaters. Here’s how it worked. While playing a TV commercial advertisers would slip in a frame or two conveying a message they want to get across. While too fast for you to visualize, your brain picks up on the message. At movie theaters they would flash pictures of popcorn, hot dogs, and drinks throughout the scenes. The message your brain picks up is that they look so enticing that you start to get hungry via the subliminal communication.

Some people have the ability to self-hypnotize themselves. The technique is similar to letting someone hypnotize you. Research indicates it is possible following these steps. First, have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Try to stick to one goal. Write out a plan noting what you want to say from beginning to end. Write several suggestions trying to use different language with each scenario. Repeat your written goals, as doing so will strengthen the suggestion and help your mind accept the goal.

Next create your vision with your own imagery using symbols and then visualize your goal, imagining yourself achieving what it is you want to accomplish. Make it real and personal by using language and images that reflect your experiences. Put your suggestions into your own words.

Begin your session in your normal voice at a calm pace. As you proceed, slow down and soften your voice, speaking softly and slower as you progress. Make yourself comfortable and free from disturbances. Dim lighting to help you relax if needed. Visualize a calming experience and allow yourself to let go, perhaps to a quiet pond or slow moving stream.
Visualize what you see, feel, hear, smell, and taste to get the most out of the experience. Slowly bring yourself back to reality.

You may find that hypnosis is a great way to relax. It can be a simple matter of practice, to get you to really experience these moments of peace and tranquility. Mind over matter and mental illusion can be real.
