When we buy a car, it is always stressed to us the importance of following the maintenance schedule to keep the car running smoothly and without incident. In fact, the warranty is dependent on it. After the warranty period has ended, it is just as important to pay attention to the vehicle with routine maintenance - even more important since the car has a bit of age on it. It does require taking some time out of a busy schedule that isn't always easy to find, but that time is well spent. It will save you much greater time and expense in the future.

The best thing you can do for your car to keep it running well and extend its life is to routinely change the oil. How often it should be done is not a matter that is generally agreed upon. The factory recommendations for most late model cars is to have the oil and filter changed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. These are often the recommendations under ideal driving conditions, which may not describe the actual conditions under which most of us use our vehicles.

The oil probably needs to be changed more frequently, for instance every six months or 3,000 miles, when you drive your car primarily for stop-and-go city commutes and frequent short trips of less than ten miles. Older cars with mileage over 75,000 miles, particularly need these frequent oil changes to prevent the formation of sludge in the engine that can result in costly damage or engine failure.

Frequent oil changes will help to eliminate the build-up of engine debris that can cause it to lose efficiency. The increased lubrication will help to keep it clean and running smoothly to maximize the gas mileage, saving you money at the pump. That increased lubrication also helps to prevent the wear and tear to keep your engine not only running better, but longer, extending the life of the vehicle. Additionally, clean oil results in reduced emissions to help protect the environment.

Most auto repair shops realize that your time and money is important to you and will offer quick service for oil and filter changes at excellent prices to encourage you to take proper care of your car. Utilizing those services can prevent expensive break-downs that can be dangerous not only to your car, but to you. Don't put it off. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
