Change may be scary, but can be so empowering. When you make a change because you want to versus you have to it’s even more energetic. Changing your appearance really puts you out there and open for feedback and judgment. There are different ways you express your appearance – in person as your physical body and online (social marketing sites, blogs, websites, etc.) as your electronic presence. When you make a change, recognize who is benefiting or driving the change. If it’s not you, then why are you changing the facade?

A façade is defined as a deception to mean that the appearance is false. When you make a change in appearance, is it reflecting your reality or just a deception? For example, many go to great lengths to lose weight and change their physical appearance. To the external population, it appears that the person is happier and healthier. Only you, the achiever knows for sure. The statistics showing how the majority put the weight right back on indicates the happiness is deceiving – it doesn’t reflect your reality. So, should the change begin internally instead of externally? It’s recognizing your core situation (belief) that is calling for an improvement.

Additionally, there are instances where the external doesn’t truly reflect the internal and you change the external appearance to reflect your reality. An electronic presence is a great example. It’s quite easy to change the theme and content of a blog. When you get smarter with the toolset, you’re empowered to improve your image electronically to reflect your truth physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s a wonderful expression of yourself and a way to show others your growth and style. In a business setting, this may equate to additional sales. Yippee! Most entrepreneurs change their electronic appearance many times over to reflect the growth of themselves and their business.

It’s common for you to resist making the change in appearance for fear of the feedback and judgment that follows. Your ability to love yourself and be self-confident is a key foundation to weather all acknowledgment. If you’re making the change for your benefit, as a confident person you would say ‘who cares what anyone else thinks – this is right for me.’ As a less confident person you would argue ‘what if xxx doesn’t like the change?’ As an example, a manager in a top accounting firm really wanted to own a jeep convertible. He chose not to purchase one as it didn’t fit the model of a conservative, corporate accountant – per his own definition. Chances are, had he purchased that jeep, his happiness and personal satisfaction from that purchase would demonstrate to others (his co-workers) his ability to successfully perform his job as a top manager and still be able to express himself for who he is and not how he believes others want him to be. His beliefs limited his happiness.

Changing your appearance, physically or electronically, is all about you. Do what makes you happy. When you’re happy, others around you will pick up on your positive energy and will in turn be happier too. As your happiness increases, you’ll continue to empower yourself to do great things – personally and professionally – as defined by you.
