Are you interested in getting a HEPA rated air filter or already have one in your home, but still wonder if you are protected from harmful chemicals that roam the air in most buildings? Well, the answer is a definite maybe. You'll need the answer to one additional question before you know the answer.

Basic HEPA air filters are built to remove airborne particulates such as dust and pollen and usually contain a carbon filter to begin filtering out odors and some chemical gasses. However, many reactive volatile gasses like formaldehyde and ammonia exist in homes everyday are not effected much by the activated carbon and need additional filtration.

HEPA filter manufacturers are now adding materials such as potassium iodide (KI) to further filter the air and remove many of these reactive chemicals. The potassium iodide reacts with these chemicals causing them to stick in the filter, effectively removing them from the air you breathe.

On the average, these filters cost an additional ten to fifteen percent over the comparable model without the additional filters but provide a very valuable addition for those that are chemically sensitive.

A quality filter containing a chemically reactive material such as potassium iodide or other reactive filter material should be expected to last about 3 years with full time use and is replaceable by changing the outside filter on the unit.

Many harmful chemicals are brought into your home by products you buy and use every day, as well as in new furniture, carpeting and building materials. You may certainly be bothered by all these things in the air in your home and not even be aware of it.

If you or anyone in your family is bothered by allergies, or sinus, headaches, or even fatigue; these chemicals in the air of your home could very well be the culprit.

These HEPA filters come in all shapes and sizes. You can purchase a good quality room sized unit for around a hundred dollars, or get a whol level or whole house unit for a few hundred. Although not a small investment for many of us, you may very well find it well worth its cost many times over in the improved health of you and your family. Additionally, a quality filter will run for pennies a day.

The addition of one of these filters made a huge difference in the air quality of my home. You may need one, too.
