Removing the window tint from your car windows may sound pretty straightforward and for the most part, it is. However, it can often be more time consuming than putting the tint on in the first place.

If you are interested in going with the do it yourself option for removing your car window tint, you should allow yourself plenty of time to get the job done. If the tint was properly applied, it is not going to come off that quickly. Be sure that you have everything you need at hand so that you can do the job all at once.

The best time to do this is on a warm, sunny day " heat will help the adhesive attaching the tint to your windows to dissolve more easily. Try to choose a day which is not uncomfortably warm, since you will need to be outside for a few hours to get the job done.

Window tint is generally applied in two layers. The top layer is fairly easy to remove; the other is much harder to take off. You need to remove both layers at the same time or you will be left slowly picking away at the second layer, which can take many hours. One thing to keep in mind is that the tint on your rear window will be stuck on the defrost lines, so remove the window tint very carefully here or you could damage your defrost lines.

If you have any type of obstructions around the window, like speakers or anything else, make sure to move it. More obstacles in your way are only going to hinder your progress. Use a garbage bag for this next step. You will have to cut it quite large so that it fits over your entire window. Spray the outside of the window with water and lay the bag over top of it.

Next, get inside and using a spray bottle, apply ammonia to the inside of the window. Do this very carefully with the doors open " you do not want to inhale any ammonia. Leave your car in the sun and cover the inside of the windows with plastic trash bags as well to keep the ammonia sealed in.

What this will do is start to loosen the adhesives which hold the window tint to your windows. After leaving your car in the sun for about an hour, you can begin peeling off the adhesive; in this time, the ammonia, water and heat should have largely dissolved the glue. Work from the edges, using a razor blade to peel away the tint. Uncover the window bit by bit as you work. Do this slowly and carefully and you should be able to peel off the tint all at once.

After you remove your window tint, the next step is to clean your windows. Use fine steel wool which will not scratch your windows and more ammonia. In most cases, you will only need to use ammonia for the back windows " the sides should come off easily.

Then rinse the window thoroughly to get the ammonia off and clean with Windex or another glass cleaner as you would normally.

This is easy to do, but must be done slowly, so be patient and work carefully so you can remove your window tint all at once.
