The lion's share of movies coming out these days are fictive movies. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about drama, comedy, thrillers, sci-fi or action movies, all of them are ficticious and don't address any real life issues. This movie, Sex Positive, is actually a documentary, and it sheds some light on what happened back in the early eighties, when an epedemic was just about to break out.
Daryl Wein is a 24 year old filmmaker who has decided to make this documentary to inform the younger generation of what happened in the eighties. In the early eighties, many gay men were leading promiscuous lives, meaning they were having unprotected anal sex. The outbreak of AIDS made all of their lives a lot harder in very little time.
This movie focuses on one man who was trying to inform the public of the looming outbreak of AIDS. This man is Richard Berkowitz, who was at one time a hardcore S&M hustler, who provided pain for pleasure. He was one of the first people to urge gay men to stop having unprotected anal sex. He was laughed at most of the time and people didn't take him seriously.
In this documentary, Richard Berkowitz talks about the breakout of AIDS. He was supported by his best friend Michael Callen. Also, controversial AIDS researcher Joseph Sonnabend was there to back him up. But despite being backed up by actual scientific research, Richard's warnings were still not taken seriously. The mainstream view in the eighties' gay community was that wearing condoms for anal sex was ridiculous.
If you get a chance to download Sex Positive. This documentary shows many people who are still around to tell the tale from the early eighties. A lot of people have died of the AIDS disease. The ones that have survived are now visibly broken and weakened by the disease. They tell their stories on the screen and manage to create a sense of understanding from the viewer's point of view.
The movie Sex Positive will be released on the 12th of June later this year. The release will be fairly limited and the movie has gotten an R rating from MPAA. The film includes strong sexual content, graphic dialogue and images. If you were not around yet in the early eighties, this movie is a valuable life lesson to you.
